Passages: 2 Chronicles 24
We all know stories of good and bad but in the story of King Joash we see a particularly sad journey for being a Good King to A Bad King. As we look at this it is an important cautionary tale for us all.
When Joash was a good king he restored
- Restore the Temple
- Restore sacrificial system and worship of God
- Restore giving to the Temple
All he did he restored the people to be the people of God once more. Their community was as if should be.
What can we learn from this?
When Joash was a bad king he forsook God
- The Temple and Worship of God were abandoned
All he did he lead the people away from God once more.
They forsook God and He forsook them.
What can we learn from this?
Why did Joash go from Good to Bad?
He didn’t own his faith
- Easily led and listened to the wrong people
- He didn’t take care of the small things
- He focused on something big
- He didn’t remove the Asherah and Idols
- He didn’t promote the teaching of the law
- He didn’t heed God’s warnings
What can we learn here to help our own discipleship and the mission of the church?
Principles to learn about God
God is faithful and will judge
- So we must be faithful and persevere, being ready
God wants to show mercy
- So we must respond to his mercy
As Zechariah said as he died:
2 Chronicles 24:22b “May the Lord see this and call you to account
The Lord sees all and will call us all to account. He is just and merciful, therefore let us learn from the life of Joash being careful not to stray for good.
As we journey through the Bible let us ask, how does knowing this help me to become wise for salvation through faith in Jesus?
- What does it teach me?
- How does it rebuke me?
- Is it correcting something in my life?
- What training can I put into place to help me live a righteous life?
- How is this equipping me for every good work?
