Passages: 1 Samuel 17
David & Goliath
When you read this chapter how would you describe what it is about? From this story often the question we can end up asking ourselves is…
‘How can I defeat the giants in my life?’
But is that what this story is about?
To get closer to the point of this chapter a question that might be better to ask is ‘How on earth does David do it?
David is the last person you would think could defeat Goliath, everything points to King Saul, but through a complete lack of faith he is controlled by fear!
Unexpectedly, David comes through, he defeats the giant and we are left wondering how? How does he do it? Well the answer is… He doesn’t! The hero of this story is not David, it’s God and seeing this helps us to get closer to the point of this chapter.
It’s not ‘How can I defeat the giants’ but ‘How can I trust in the One who defeats giants’.
This is a chapter thats all about FAITH. As we explore it we will see that David gives us two Pictures.
Firstly he gives us a picture of WHAT faith is. Key to this are his experiences and understanding of God.
Secondly, he gives us a picture of WHO we can put our faith in. David is pointing us forward to u Jesus…
Keeping God at the forefront of our minds
As we journey through the Bible let us ask, how does knowing this help me to become wise for salvation through faith in Jesus?
- What does it teach me?
- How does it rebuke me?
- Is it correcting something in my life?
- What training can I put into place to help me live a righteous life?
- How is this equipping me for every good work?
