Passages: Exodus 1-6
As God prophesied to Abraham, that his children would be slaves in Egypt. As we come to Exodus we see this is what happened but that God knows the plight of His people, He cares and He will fulfil His promise too Abraham. We also God’s protection of Moses as a baby and that God has big plans for Moses.
God called Moses
As we consider the calling of Moses we can see that God was with him, and in His timing He called Moses to fulfil to task He had planned for Moses to complete.
- Bush was on fire it did not burn up.
- PCI – use the symbol of the burning burn with the words ‘ardens sed virens’ which means ‘burning but flourishing‘.
- Why is this is a powerful image of what it looks like to live in God’s calling?
Excuse 1 – Who am I?
He struggled with Identity
Exodus 3:11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
Exodus 3:12 And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”
When we struggle with Identity asking. Who am I? The truth is it doesn’t really matter the important element is this that God knows us, God has called us and God is with us.
How does this help you what you struggle with identity?
God gave him a sign
Exodus 3:12 And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”
God here is saying confidently I will do this, live in my calling and it will happen.
Excuse 2 – Who are you?
He struggled with Intimacy
Exodus 3:13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, `The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, `What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”
Exodus 3:14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
15 God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers–the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob–has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.
God reveals himself to Moses.
Jesus have revealed himself to us.
John 14:14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit–fruit that will last.
Does a lack of intimacy with Jesus stop us following God’s calling on our lives?
Excuse 3 – What if they wouldn’t listen?
He struggled with Intimidation
Exodus 4:1 Moses answered, “What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, `The LORD did not appear to you’?”
God encourages Moses telling and showing him that the power of God goes with him.
If God has called us God will equip us through the power of the Holy Spirit, how does this help you overcome intimation?
Excuse 4 – I can’t speak well!
He struggled with Inadequacy
Exodus 4:10 Moses said to the LORD, “O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.”
God encourages Moses reminding him that God gave him his mouth, God can do amazing things, and that God will help and teach Moses. Moses just had to go.
How does this reminder help us as we struggle with inadequacy?
Luke 12:12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”
Excuse 5 – Find someone else!
He struggled with Inferiority
Exodus 4:13 But Moses said, “O Lord, please send someone else to do it.”
God shows us that you can be angry and still love.
But God still used him, God knew what would happen and had already sent Aaron on his way to meet Moses and help him.
